FAMOUS PIANISTS
HAND SPANS

I have dedicated this page to recording my observations and estimations of the hand spans of famous concert artists from around the world. I started this project simply as a bit of fun, out of sheer curiosity, but it has actually proved to be very useful in my own piano journey. I think there are some real benefits to this type of research. There is no one-size fits all approach to technique, so it can be very illuminating to study how a small-handed pianist goes about a certain passage in comparison to a larger-handed pianist. How do the techniques differ? What modifications and adaptations are made? How does this affect the musical outcome? Does a smaller hand restrict the choice of repertoire? 

In the interests of avoiding publishing copyrighted images, I have taken the trouble of drawing all the images myself from still shots acquired online. I sent the screenshots to my tablet and traced the pictures to be sure of the accuracy, but bear in mind that some of the images where a little on the fuzzy side. I have done my best to outline the shape of the hand and fingers as accurately as I can. Scroll down to read more about my method for estimating hand span.

I thought I would start off with 11 female pianists and then later on I will add 11 male pianists, for no particular reason other than to give me a target to get the project started. This is an ongoing project, and I will undoubtedly make adjustments to my estimates over time.

Female pianists

Alicia de Larrocha

Of all the pianists that are mentioned with regards to small hands, Alicia de Larrocha is perhaps the most widely known. It is often said that she could reach a 10th in her youth, which has often intrigued me, given the apparent contradictory nature of these two statments. Digging a little deeper, I found it isn't quite so contradictory. Firstly, I wanted to know what the video evidence of her adult years revealed.

 

In the image shown below she appears to be managing a left-hand 9th with ease, but appearances can be deceptive. When I watch the video footage from which the image was taken, she appears to be anchoring the little finger on the D, using the adjacent key (the note E) as something to press against to force the stretch. You can try this techniqe for yourself and measure to see how much more span it provides:

 

  • Measure your maximum stretch against a ruler, placing the hand flat on a table directly in front of you and measuring between the tips of fingers 1 and 5

  • Move your hand back towards your body until fingers 1 and 5 drop off the front edge of the table. Now gently, but firmly press fingers 1 and 5 against the table edge whilst stretching your span once more as far as you can comfortably go (being very, very careful to not over-stretch!). Measure once more. The table needs to be heavy enough so that you don't just end up pushing it away from you. You could also use the front edge of a piano, or even a wall.

 

When I do this, I gain almost half an inch on my usual maximum span, making a 10th possible, however, I do not consider this to be my maximum span, since it can only be achieved with some preparation and therefore can only be used in a situation where enough preparation time exists. My own personal benchmark for a maximum interval stretch is therefore the one you can play consecutively up or down the keyboard without taking the time to prepare the hand before playing.​ For me, that interval is a 9th. 

 

My estimation of Alicia's maximum span is around 7 3/4 inches. With enough flexibility in the hand, a 10th is achievable for this size of span.

Here is another image, this time of a left-hand octave (F - F). Notice the sharp angle of fingers 1 and 5 in both images.

Yuja Wang

The second pianist on my list, Yuja Wang, is also often cited as having small hands. Based on the video evidence, I would agree with this statement. I estimate her span to be around 7 3/4 inches, or possibly a little larger, but I don't think by much. This is comparable to Alicia de Larrocha. A span of this size brings a 9th within reach on the edge of the keys.

 

Shown below is an image of a left-hand octave. Notice the sharp angle of fingers 1 and 5, at nearly 90 degrees to the line of the forearm. This is very similar to the image of the octave played by Alicia de Larrocha above.

In the image below, Yuja is stretching a 10th between D and F in her left hand. This is a large stretch, so, is my estimation of 7 3/4 inches wrong? I don't think so, for the reasons stated above with regards to Alicia de Larrocha. If you look at the shape of the hand, the 5th finger is barely hanging on to the corner of the key and is stretched out at an incredibly sharp angle. This is very much a forced stretch, but it does reveal just how flexible Yuja's fingers are!

In the next image she is stretching a minor 10th in the left hand. This is a big chord, consisting of the notes G, C, E and B flat, although in order to reach the B flat with her left-hand thumb she is having to fully play the adjacent white key (A). Performers with small hands have to routinely come up with solutions to overcome large stretches, but in this case it is adding another note to the harmony that is not in the score. More frequently, those with small hands tend to miss out notes rather than add them in, but sometimes a straddled note can be pressed down quietly without being obtrusive. ​The B flat is hidden in the image but she is definitely playing it when you watch the video.

Given her small span, her technical achievements on the piano are astonishing. Clearly you do not need to be able to comfortable stretch a 10th in order to play works by Rachmaninov, Liszt, Brahms or Chopin, but of course, a larger span is going to help, and would very much lessen the chances of pain or injury due to over-stretching. Remember that a larger span does not simply help you to reach larger intervals, but it also helps you to move quicker into position across the keyboard since there is less distance for the hand and fingers to travel.

Valentina Lisitsa 

I have occasionally seen Valentina Lisitsa grouped with pianists having a larger span, and that has certainly been my impression as I have watched many of her performances over the years. She always appears to handle big chords and octaves with ease, so I was very intrigued to find out what the video evidence revealed.​ In the image below she is stretching a 9th between G and A in the right hand. The hand does not look over-stretched at all. Fingers 1 and 5 are at comfortable angles, not at sharp angles to the forearm, and the thumb tip is angled at the joint, which indicates that there is plenty of wiggle room for the hand to stretch further.

In the image below she is playing a 10th with the right-hand. Fingers 1 and 5 are now at wider angles to the forearm, as you would expect. Note also that the fingers are now positioned on the edges of the keys, with only the innermost corner of the key held with finger 5. Compare this to the 9th in the image above where the fingers are firmly on the key surface. I would estimate that this is her maximum stretch, given the shape of the hand and the position of the fingers. This would put her maximum span close to the 8 1/2 inch mark by my estimation, which is towards the larger end of the scale for females (but interestingly only around the average for males). In my view, this size of span is really the minimum size for reaching a 10th with some degree of comfort and without having to prepare the hand.

Maria João Pires

Of all the femail pianists on this page, Maria João Pires certainly has the smallest span, which I estimate to be around 7-inches. This means that her maximum interval is barely an octave. In the image below she is stretching an octave from F - F. You can't see her playing the lower F here, but it is clear on the audio when watching the video from which the image below was taken. Finger 5 is at a very sharp angle to the forearm and is barely hanging on to the edge of the key. ​

Here is another octave, this time on the black keys. Once again, fingers 1 and 5 are almost at 90 degrees to the line of the forearm: 

A 7-inch span is truly a small span. It is at the lower end of the scale for average female spans, and right at the bottom end when you consider females and males combined. Her accomplishments as a pianist are therefore all the more astonishing. This gives hope to all the small-handed pianists out there. Does her small span restrict her in terms of repertoire? At this stage I am unsure, but after briefly looking at her recorded output, it seems to consist of a lot of Mozart, with some Bach, Schubert, Beethoven and Chopin.

Martha Argerich

There are many videos online showcasing Martha's dazzling, virtuosic octave playing. To play consecutive octaves with such apparent comfort and ease is remarkable, but to my surprise it seems that her hands are not particularly large. The video evidence reveals that she can stretch a 10th (see below), however I would not call this a particularly comfortable 10th, since the fingers are on the very edge of the keys. I estimate her maximum span to be around 8 1/4 inches or possibly a little bigger, but certainly no more than 8 1/2 inches. 

The following 10th is smaller (narrower) than the major 10th in the image above. 

Idil Biret

Idil Biret's repertoire encompasses composers such as Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Brahms, and she is well known for her Chopin recordings. Given her wide-ranging repertoire, it certainly took me by surprise to find that her hands are small. I reached an estimation of around 7 1/2 - 7 3/4 inches. At this size of span a 9th is possible on the edge of the keys, but a 10th is completely out of range. Here is a right-hand octave between G - G. 

Here is another octave, which again illustrates just how stretched the hand is, with very little in the way of a natural arch shape. The only examples I could find of her playing 9ths were unfortunately very blurry images that I couldn't use. In fact, the image below was also not very clear, but I have done my best to resolve the outline of the hand.

Hélène Grimaud

The French pianist Hélène Grmaud has recorded Rachmaninoff, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin and Liszt amongst others, so she certainly does not shy away from big chords and octaves. Shown below is an image of her left hand playing an octave. Try matching your own hand to the same shape. When I do this, the shape of my hand is the same as it would be for my usual octave span, and my left hand is just about 8 1/4 inches at maximum span, so this is also my best guess for Hélène, although it could be a little smaller, perhaps closer to 8 inches. 

With a span of around 8 inches, a 9th is possible on the edge of the keys, but also certain 10ths come into reach. It is important to understand that all 10ths are not equal. On a standard 6.5-inch octave keyboard, the minor 10th shown in the image below between E-flat and G-flat is the smallest at c.20.7cm. A white key 10th is a little bigger (c.21.2cm). A black key 10th, e.g. between F-sharp and A-sharp, is wider still (21.8cm), and a 10th such as E-flat to G is the widest (c.22.2cm). 

Angela Hewitt

Well-known for her Bach interpretations, Angela Hewitt has also recorded Couperin, Rameau, Ravel, Schumann, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy and Fauré amongst others. I would estimate her span to be very comparable to Hélène Grimaud, at around 8-inches. I have found no video evidence of her playing 10ths, but looking at the images of 9ths below, the narrowest 10th interval between E-flat to G-flat looks distinctly possible. 

Mitsuko Uchida

Mitsuko Uchida is most well known for her interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Mozart, in particular, seems to be her specialism and with this information, you might expect her to have a smaller span, since Mozart typically does not contain large stretches. In this case the opposite is true. Here is an image of her spanning an octave.

In my view this is a very relaxed, comfortable shape. I would estimate her span to be around 8 3/4 inches, or possibly a little smaller, but no smaller than 8 1/2 inches. This is how I arrived at the result; when I match my left hand to the same shape and place it on a standard 6.5 inch octave keyboard, with finger 5 on A, it works out to my thumb being about a half inch short of Mitsuko's position, indicating that her stretch is possibly around half an inch bigger than mine (my left hand span is 8 1/4 inches). To reinforce this result, when I place my hand in the same shape on a 6 inch octave keyboard, it fits to the octave in the same way as in the image above. A 6 inch octave is, in effect, the equivalent of me playing on an instrument with hands half an inch larger.

 

The following image also reinforces this estimation. A black-key 10th such as this (around 21.8cm), is wider than a white key 10th (around 21.2cm) and requires a hand span of at least 8 1/2 inches.

Yulianna Avdeeva

To date, Yulianna is only the 4th woman to have won the international Chopin competition. Here is an image of her spanning an octave. As with Mitsuko, her hand shape looks very relaxed at this interval. 

In the image below she is playing a 9th. This type of 9th is slightly wider than a purely white key 9th. 

And finally, a black key 10th played with the left hand. Remember that a black-key 10th such as this (around 21.8cm), is even wider than a white key 10th (c.21.2cm). This requires a hand span of at least 8 1/2 inches. If you compare this image to the black key 10th played by Mitsuko, Yulianna's hand shape appears to be more relaxed. It looks like she could stretch the hand even further, possibly to an 11th. It is difficult to match the hand shape with this image as it is viewed from the side, but I would estimate that she has a span of around 9 inches, although it is quite possibly a little smaller, maybe closer to 8 3/4 inches.

Gabriela Montero

Gabriela Montero is famous for her improvisatory abilities, but she is also an acclaimed concert artist with a formidable technique. Her hand size looks very similar to Yulianna Avdeeva. I would again estimate a span of around 9-inches. Here is an image of an octave played with the right hand. Notice how relaxed the hand looks, and the natural arch shape .

Here is a white key 10th. The thumb is at a comfortable angle to the keys, especially for a 10th. This indicates that there is still a bit of wiggle room to allow the hand to stretch further.

The 10th shown below, by comparison, is larger than the one above. This type of 10th, a minor 10th between F-sharp and A, is the largest on the keyboard at c.22.2cm. Given the size of this interval, the hand still appears to have a comfortable arch shape. This woud require a span of at least 9-inches. Even though the F-sharp is obscured in the image, it is obvious she is playing it when watching the video, and from examining the score.

Measuring hand span; my method

I am not yet at the stage of contacting concert pianists and asking them to measure their hands directly (although I am not discounting this, and may do so in the future). Since this is just a bit of fun, I needed a method that could give me a reasonably good estimate using images and videos alone. I came up with the idea of judging the degree of relaxation in the hands for various intervals based on the shape of the hand. The interval reached by the pianist is obviously critical, but the shape of the hand also needs to be considered, since there is a difference between the widest interval you can physically play, where discomfort is at its maximum and security is at its minimum, and the widest interval that is playable with some security and no pain or discomfort. Examining the image closely, I can then match my own hand shape to the same shape as in the image. I am not simply talking about adopting the same stretch, but closely examining the position and angle of all the fingers and matching these as best as I can with my own hand. I then place my hand on the same notes as in the image, using a standard 6.5-inch octave piano. Since I know my own hand span measurement (slightly under 8 inches for the right hand, and slightly over 8 inches for the left hand), I can use this as a base line and then measure the difference between the notes reached by the pianist in question compared to the position my hand reaches in the same shape. To back this up, I can also  place my hand on keyboards with different octave widths (5.5 and 6.0 inch octaves), playing the same notes, to see which one is the closest match to the image I am looking at. A 6-inch octave keyboard gives me the equivalent of a hand that can stretch half an inch wider than normal. A 5.5-inch keyboard would be the equivalent of gaining an inch of hand span. This can be augmented by other forms of evidence, such as other images of different intervals played by the same pianist, watching the hand in motion, and looking out for physical signs of tension in the hand.

 

I am admittedly only ever going to achieve a rough estimate with this approach, but I do have some confidence in my method and I believe that I can get somewhat closer to the truth than many of the sweeping statements that are often made. In fact, that is really what got me started on this project, as I was very dubious about some of the sources of information I had encountered online. You can make your own mind up as to how accurate you think I am and I would encourage you to try the hand shape method to see if you agree with me. Of course, what I think is an uncomfortable (or comfortable) hand shape, may not be for somebody else. The angles of fingers 1 and 5 in relation to the line of the forearm is often the first thing that stands out to me, as well as the more pronounced creases on the back of the hand when stretching (as far as I know I think these are called dorsal creases, but please do correct me if I'm wrong). The difference between two pianists hands playing the same intervals is often quite marked.

Here is a list of some of the things to consider when measuring or estimating hand span:

  • Measuring hand span directly with a ruler, or using a chart, may seem like a foolproof method, but accurate measurements are not guaranteed. It depends on how well you observe and record the information, and how much the stretch is forced. This of course leads to the question of what determines a maximum stretch, but more on this later.

  • There is a difference between the size of the outstretched hand from fingers 1 - 5, and the actual interval you can physically play. In other words, you cannot simply take a ruler to the keyboard and transfer your measured span to it in order to find out the largest interval you can reach. Reaching is one thing, playing is another! For example, on the standard 6.5 inch octave keyboard a 10th on the white keys looks playable with a span of just over 8 inches, however, you lose at least a few millimetres of stretch when the fingers press the keys (this is true especially for the white keys where the fingers have to bridge over adjacent keys. This makes a 10th interval unreachable, or barely reachable for a span that is just over 8 inches. The black keys by comparison are raised above the level of the white keys, and the gaps between them are greater so the stretch is not as great). For this reason, I have mainly used images where the pianist is physically pressing the keys, rather than images where the fingers are resting on the key surface.

  • The easiest images to work with are the aerial shots. For other camera angles from the side, or from below, matching the shape is much harder and therefore the span estimate is going to be less accurate. Unfortunately, hunting down a video with aerial shots of a specific interval stretch is like searching for a needle in a haystack!

  • There is a difference between the widest interval you can physically play, where discomfort is at its maximum and security is at its minimum, and the widest interval that is playable with some security and no pain or discomfort. The question to ask here is; which one of these do you class as  your maximum stretch?  Is it fair to say that you can stretch a 10th if you are in a lot of discomfort and hanging on to the edge of the keys? 

  • For large stretches on the white keys, a pianist will typically avoid stretching the hand more than is necessary. This often means the fingers are not centred on the keys, but positioned towards the inner edge of the key (i.e. towards the palm)

  • Large intervals toward the maximum span of the hand are typically reached with the finger tips on the edge of the keys, with the hand itself off the keyboard almost entirely. Some intervals can only be reached by first anchoring the thumb (or little finger) and then using the side or the front of the adjacent white key as something to press against. This is a useful technique that can gain you perhaps up to half an inch (in my case) on your usual maximum stretch, but be aware that this is putting your hand under a lot of stress.

  • The span and flexibility between individual fingers (not counting the 1 - 5 span) is also very important. The 2 – 5 span for example needs to be at least 6 inches in order to reach large chords and 7ths on the standard keyboard. Also bear in mind that an octave stretch consisting of two notes is very different to an octave stretch involving multiple notes within a chord. The use of additional fingers in-between the two outer notes puts far greater stress on the hand as it adjusts to the shapes and orientations required to play the chord.

  • There is often a small but important size difference between the right and left hand. It is often the case that one hand can stretch a little further than the other. This is an important factor to consider when judging hand span. 

  • If a pianist chooses to roll a 9th or a 10th (i.e. an arpeggiation that is not indicated in the score), this doesn't really say much about whether or not they can stretch a 9th or 10th. More evidence is needed, since it is frequently the case that artistic decisions govern the choice of a rolled chord. Perhaps just as frequently, rolling an interval could be used simply to avoid over-stretching the hand, not because the interval cannot be reached

  • The entire hand shape and the angles and positions of all the fingers needs to be considered. As an example, when the hand is in a relaxed shape, with hardly any stretching at all between fingers 1 and 5, a stretch between other fingers, for instance 1 and 2, or 4 and 5, will put the hand under much greater tension.

The hardest part of the process is hunting down the images and then making the drawings. I have started doing this for some of the male pianists listed above and I do have some early estimations I can share here. Daniel Barenboim appears to have the smallest hands on the list so far at around 7 3/4-inches, but interestingly some of the other male pianists that supposedly have smaller hands, such as Perahia and Ashkenazy, actually have hands of at least around 8 1/2 inches. Of course, this depends on how you define a small hand. Rubinstein, Horrowitz, Lang Lang, Ax and Richter all appear to have spans of at least 9 inches.
